The Dufour 470, is the Boat of the Year 2022 by the American magazine SAIL & the Best Monohull (41-50ft) category.

For many the choice of boat in this part of the market is based primarily on interior accommodation and the Dufour 470 excels in this respect. It should clearly be on the shortlist for anyone who needs this much space. Against that, it’s not the most rewarding boat of this size to sail and the cockpit layout could make sail handling easier. It therefore may not satisfy all the criteria for those seeking a thoroughbred performance yacht. Nevertheless, the vice-free handling and high stability that makes for comfortable, relaxed and safe cruising are important points in the boat’s favour. And once you start looking at comparison boats the Dufour 470 appears tremendously good value for money – providing you can resist ticking too many boxes on the options list.

The 470 is offered in three distinct versions to suit every owners needs whether sailing with a full crew or short handed. The 4 cabin/4 heads layout plus skipper cabin and side galley in a European Ambiance interior and sunbed offers an ideal charter layout with large cabins aft and forward each with their own private bathroom - a definite advantage in the growing trends of chartering.

Dufour 48 exclusive offer

The world is going to the cats—multihulls that is. And it’s no surprise really. Boats with two hulls have been growing in popularity for their stability, livability and extensive use in charter. It seems that major brands of monohull production builders already have an associated cat line.

With global yacht cruising demand shifting in favor of catamarans, helped by technical leaps and vastly improved designs, it was only a matter of time before traditional monohull builders branched out and took the plunge into the murky world of twin hulls. The vanguard of this group is the Dufour 48. First multihull in the long history of the French shipyard Dufour, winner of the boat award of the year 2018.

Dufour’s sailing pedigree shines through in many aspects of their new catamaran. The sleek lines and fast hull position her at the sailing end of the production cat spectrum, while the accommodation is comfortable enough to seriously rival the competition. It appears Dufour has identified a gap in the market between the ever-popular Lagoon 450 and the Bali 5.4 that needed filling, and has filled it well with a concept that stays true to its reputation for superb build quality and seaworthiness while adding a touch of comfort and style.

All in all, it’s an impressive catamaran debut from the French yard, a high-end yacht that is just as comfortable on charter in the Med as she would be on long bluewater legs.

With its lovely lines and good performance, the Dufour 48 may be the ideal catamaran to convert inveterate monohull sailors!
